CHANGSHAS, Hiinas – On March 31, Sunward unveiled the world’s largest range-extended rotary drilling rig in Changsha, marking a major advancement in electric construction equipment.
The new rig features an operating weight of 200 tons, a torque of 620 kN·m, and a maximum drilling diameter of 3,500 mm. It incorporates breakthrough technologies, including multi-motor synchronization, transient load buffer control, and main winch potential energy recovery, supported by over a dozen authorized patents.

The rig combines the environmental benefits of pure electric drive with solutions to range limitations found in conventional electric equipment. It supports pure electric, range-extended, and plug-in modes, offering strong torque, fast response, and low noise. The model is well-suited for large-scale bridge and high-speed rail foundation projects, environmentally sensitive urban areas, and remote sites with limited grid access.
With 20 intent orders already secured, totaling RMB 120 million in value, the launch signals a shift from pilot applications to large-scale commercialization of electric rotary drilling rigs.
